San Diego Eats :: Dinner at Casa Sol y Mar

As I mentioned, we were busy this weekend. Busy eating.

Another one of our most anticipated new places to try was Diane Powers' Casa Sol y Mar in Del Mar. We were anxious to try this one for several reasons:
  1. We LOVE Mexican food.
  2. We're pretty big fans of Diane Powers' other two restaurants (Casa de Bandini & Casa Guadalajara).
  3. It's walking distance from our house [hello, second margarita!].
We were already familiar with the style of the restaurant which is over-the-top in Old Mexico charm. When we first stepped foot into Casa de Bandini two years ago, my first thought was "well, this is comical" as I looked around the room seeing donkey after donkey and saddle blanket after saddle blanket complete with waitresses adorned in colorful costumes. I think we'll both admit, we judged that proverbial book a little too quickly. It ended up being one of our favorite places to eat, so much so that we will still make the 'pilgrimage' to Carlsbad to eat there. Until now.

We were both pumped to find that the newest member of the Diane Powers' family would be moving in "next door" to our little community and couldn't wait to try it out! Of course, I had a margarita (my favorite!) and cheese enchiladas. Spencer tried a new dish: Pollo Fundido (a flash fried burrito topped with a creamy jalapeño cheese sauce). I couldn't decide on a favorite. They were both SO good! We kicked back on the patio and enjoyed the night.

a beautiful evening for some patio dining!
i just discovered you can order your margarita with extra salt.
mind. blown.
where are the enchiladas!?
oh, right. under all of that goodness :)
look at the size of that thing! delish.
enjoying the evening :)
hasta luego!
we'll be back :)

San Diego Eats :: Brunch at The Craftsman

We did something this weekend that we never do.

We tried a new restaurant.

But not just one... we tried six new restaurants to be exact. In one [long] weekend.
It. Was. Awesome.

One of the six was one that we'd happened upon one day by sheer accident. We were headed to lunch at a Mexican food restaurant next door when we noticed The Craftsman. The cute, rustic interior caught my eye and Spencer was sold when he saw a pig (bacon) as a highlight to the menu. We knew we had to try it.

We stopped by Sunday afternoon for brunch, and holy cow are we glad we did! With live music, bottomless mimosas, and a few insanely delicious breakfast selections, we were settling in for a great day. I went with the Eggs Benedict while Spencer stuck with the All American Breakfast. The Eggs Benedict had a roasted red pepper hollandaise sauce that was slightly peppery and completely delicious. Spencer's All American was simple, but served with some kind of apple cinnamon jam that tasted straight from heaven. Both were exceptional.

Needless to say, we'll be back. Again and again :)

decisions, decisions.
looooove the interior of this place and loooooove those mimosas!
my handsome date.
hello, blue eyes!
eggs benedict.
it took some serious restraint not to get this dessert.
i've had it once before and it still haunts my dreams.
full tummy and happy.

Where's your favorite brunch stop? What's your favorite dish?

let's talk fashion :: PINK is totally trending right now!

Admittedly, I'm not the first person that comes to mind when one thinks about the season's current fashion trends, nor should I be! Gracious knows that my closet doesn't reflect either "current" or "trending".

But, I do LOVE to get dressed up!

And I love jewelry.

And flowers.

Despite myself, after years of boyfriend trying to mold me into the perfect preppy girl after his own style (preppy boy not preppy girl, duh), I think it's finally working.

Cue the color pink.

I've never been a girl in love with the color pink. I can appreciate a salmon colored vase, or a fresh picked bouquet of pink peonies, but pink... on me... no.

Until recently.

I don't know how it happened, but lately it seems to be the only color popping up in all of my clothes, jewelry, makeup, and photos. I can't get enough of it lately! I keep telling myself it's just the 'color of spring' and all will soon go back to normal (AKA black pants, black tops, black shoes... I could be a mortician...or a waiter), but until then, I'll just keep enjoying my little pops of pink!

my wine glass is pink.
my bracelets are pink.
my crafts are pink.
my wardrobe is pink.
my earrings are pink.
i only photograph pink flowers (of late).
my pedicure is pink.

It's EVERYWHERE! And, I like it :)

Happy Memorial Day Weekend, All!

hey hottie :)
love to get dressed up!
what a perfect night.
the signature cocktail at happy hour AND the movie was some version of a margarita.
i finally tried my hand at mod podge.
oh. my. gosh.
i now know why everyone loves it.
it's addicting...
i could not stop crafting.
also on the to do list was this braided leather bracelet.
my first acai bowl as a californian.
i ate the whole thing. don't worry about it.
whaaat? you thought the bracelet crafting was over? psh.
this one was a gift :)
sunday afternoon i treated myself to a relaxing, long-overdue pedicure.
again, i'm aware of the white legs.
rome wasn't built in a day, people.
i played around with some mix-and-match prints.
still getting used to the idea, but kind of digging it so far.

ahhhh, i think i have discovered my accessory weakness.
second only to scarves.

Those are my happies from the weekend!

awkward & awesome :: green envy

[top] banana republic  ◊  [shorts] express  ◊  [sandals] target
[wooden bangle] gifted  ◊  [monogrammed bracelet] gifted  ◊  [bow cuff] DIY'd   ◊  [earrings] banana republic

How adorable is that photo-bombing Golden Retriever? Let's all just agree. #proudparent

OK you probably noticed this outfit looks semi-familiar, no? As does the cuff? That's right -- this is the casual version of the outfit I wore when I debuted my DIY leather bow cuff.
Like it? I'm happy to make one for you for $5! Just shoot me a message and I can show you a range of color options available. I literally probably have every color under the sun already purchased.

Wow... that selfish plug came out of nowhere! My apologies :)

  • How unfathomably white my legs are. Seriously, it’s May in Southern California. #getatan
  • Making the walk of shame back to the condo to get more “doggy doody bags” (SERIOUS marketing going on there, folks) after my dog relieved herself in the community center near our house, and I was left stranded… with no “doody bags”. Don’t worry. It’s not like there were any little league games going on, or a tennis tournament, or 4 basketball courts full of kids to see me duck out of clean-up doody. Just kidding! ALL of those things were happening! Needless to say, I’ll never leave home again unprepared. I was mortified, but London was totally cool with it.
  • That time I told my boss the brown slab of terrazzo she had on her desk looked like a brownie. It was early, and my coffee hadn't kicked in yet.
  • Getting to work on Monday morning after dressing extra special knowing you have a new client meeting later that afternoon, only to find that the air conditioner in the office is broken on the one day the temperatures are skyrocketing to the upper 90’s. Silk blouse for the WIN.
  • On that same token, this was the same evening I’d scheduled to take the above outfit pics. It’s super hard to be cute when you feel like you’ve been in a sauna all day. And that hair! Better luck next time.
  • The plumbing fixtures rep who spent the entire lunch-n-learn giving a weeeeeee bit too much detail about the workings of pipes and how water carries "things" through the pipes. Beet salad, anyone? I thought it would make an encore performance if he didn't shut his p-trap soon.

  • Tomorrow. Is. Friday. YESSSS!!!!!!!
  • Finally getting caught up with Downton Abbey, Season 3 (yay!!) and fully and compassionately grieving with the rest of America for the fictional character that was killed off. Seriously, OMMMGGG.

  • This lemon-asparagus risotto recipe that you make in the MICROWAVE! This changes weeknight dining, people! I'm a big fan of Cooking Light magazine. The foodie pictures are always oh-so-pretty and I love the tips & tricks articles, but as gorgeous as the images are I have never made a single recipe! I decided to change that when I saw a whole section of microwaveable meals to make at home. Uh, hello! Right up my alley! I roasted the asparagus instead of boiled it to bring out the flavor a little more, but otherwise I followed the recipe exactly and holy cow. It was amazing!

  • The Surprise Sale from Kate Spade earlier this week. Let’s just say I’m glad I’d mentally prepared myself with a “budget” before looking, because the handbags section was to diiiiiieee for. Massive cuteness at massive reductions. I settled for a pair of gold and pink bow earrings which I adore! Because a girl can never have too many bows. Even at age twenty-seven.

  • Boyfriend has concocted a date night for the books tomorrow night! I’m sure I can share more later, but we’re having an old school dinner and a movie date complete with pre-movie cocktails, dinner at the theatre, and dessert somewhere after. I’m beyond the moon excited as we’re seeing The Great Gatsby, which happens to be one of our favorite novels. So much so that had we adopted London’s brother, we’d already planned to name him “Gatsby”. We even toyed with the idea of naming her (London) “Zelda”, but it didn’t seem to fit her. Plus, I know it’s a completely different entity altogether, but whenever I hear Zelda, I can’t help but think of “Xena”… you know, as in Xena: Warrior Princess. Who else remembers that show, for better or worse?

That about does it for me!

What are you lovelies up to this weekend?

{Recipe} roasted tomato salad

I don't know about you guys, but I love tomatoes.

It only took about 25 years, but I finally came around to them. And now I can't get enough!

I learned how to properly roast them in the oven during the Sur la Table cooking class I took. I absolutely love the way these taste when cooked! Roasting the tomatoes intensifies the flavor, and makes them taste sweeter and more savory at the same time. Magic!

I mean, just look at these bad boys!

The best part about this recipe is that it's quick! It cooks in 5-8 minutes and is meant to be served immediately. It's the perfect companion to a summer BBQ, since you can just as easily throw them on the grill. Enjoy!

Roasted Tomato Salad

  • Small container (10 oz.) grape tomatoes
  • 1 Tsp. lemon rind
  • 1 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • Dash of Italian seasoning
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Fresh ground black pepper, to taste

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray, and place into oven while pre-heating (this is the most important part--you want your baking sheet to be nice and hot once the tomatoes are placed on top).

Slice the tomatoes from top to bottom (not crosswise).
*Slicing them from top to bottom ensures that one side will not cook faster or slower than the other. The "top" of the tomato is where the stem would have been.

Place halved tomatoes face down onto hot baking sheet. Return to oven and cook for 5-8 minutes.

While tomatoes are cooking, combine rind, juice, and oil in a small dish.

Remove from oven, and gently toss with juice mixture. Top with Italian seasoning, salt & pepper.

Serve immediately.

I think this salad would be fantastic tossed with mozzarella pearls and a few sprigs of fresh basil. Spoon onto crostini and drizzle with a little fresh balsamic on top and enjoy!

Bon appetit!

Points of Pinterest: DIY Leather Bow Cuff

How many of us are guilty for pinning excessively and uncontrollably? We have the best intentions of following through with those piñata cookies or homemade laundry detergent, but life gets in the way and we just keep pinning.

Guilty as charged.

I've been inspired by my pal Allison over at Pookah Knits who has been crafting up a slew of accessories from Pinterest lately. She has made some awesome bracelets and a necklace that I am itching to try my hand at, too. She got me thinking... why haven't I made any accessories that I've pinned?

So with all of the necessary supplies already at home and a newly found motivation, I set out to make this leather bow cuff from my handmade: clothes & accessories board, which was ironically one of the first things I ever pinned!

I have to admit, I'm pleased as peaches with the way it turned out. Using a fabric snap as the closure couldn't be any easier to get on and off. I'm debuting it today with my lovely new kelly green top from Banana Republic (thank you, 50% off Mother's Day sale!) and am loving it!

Now that I've overcome the first DIY accessory, I'm a force to be reckoned with :)
