what's new? [but i promise: nothing old, borrowed, or blue]

Because I like to keep my promises and that includes not turning this blog into wedding headquarters, coupled with the fact that it's been a minute since I gave you all a life update, I just thought I'd pop in and share a little of our lives in 2014!

First of all, is it seriously almost February... seriously?! I really feel like we were I was just popping corks to ring in the new year! (I say me, because long story short, Spencer had bronchitis on NYE, so after a Domino's pizza [how. lame. are. we.] and a little Emergen-C, he passed right out on the sofa. Me, not wanting to let that chilling bottle of champs go to waste, popped a bottle and had a little mini party right there next to him!) THAT is love, my friends!

But really... it's February in just a couple of days and rumor has it, the Girl Scouts are already making their way around town, peddling their wares. Damn them, and their Tagalongs (read: Peanut Butter Patties, for those of you who call them by the correct name).

I've been working really hard on my resolutions, and so far so good. After a ton of research, I finally broke down and bought a Clarisonic Mia2. I'd been looking at them for a long time and wondering if they were really as good as all of the reviewers were saying. I'm only a week into using mine, and I love it! Once you get past the scary, holy-cow-why-is-my-skin-freaking-out?! phase, it's all downhill. Also in an effort to keep my skin glowing, I've been amping up the green smoothie fuel. I. Love. Green. Smoothies. So. Much. For Christmas, I got a Vitamix and my world has changed. I mean that! It sounds so silly to say that a blender is your favorite kitchen gadget, but on the reals, this thing is legit! The more difficult of the resolutions to stick with is resisting the urge to reach for my phone at night, but I'm making progress and can honestly say that I've been far less stressed than ever before. And that's saying a lot... considering work started out with a bang this year. A win for everyone.

Also it's a bit belated, but Spencer celebrated his 29th birthday last week! We played it pretty low-key since his big day fell on a week day, but nonetheless had a great day celebrating! He's totally fine with the fact that it's his last year as a 'twenty-something', but I am freaking out. To think that this year will mark my ten-year reunion from high school is a thought that I am willingly ready to push past. It feels like yesterday that we were roaming the halls, counting down the minutes until school was out, reminiscing about the past weekend and simultaneously planning the next one. Can't. Deal.

Our weekdays have been full of DVR watching (it's Juan-uary, people!) and our weekends full of friends and celebrations. So much fun, this new year has been.

I heard on the radio today that 'winter has come to San Diego'. Please don't take this lightly... we are talking 50 degree temps here. It's totally laughable, I know. In all seriousness, it's been horribly dry here which has increased fire hazard levels from high to very high. It's supposed to rain all weekend, which will be a welcome change. I adore rainy weekends in SoCal. The perfect excuse to relax and recharge...maybe knit a little, maybe read a little, maybe watch a movie or two. After all, when it's too foggy to even see the Pacific, what good is being outdoors at all? :)

pOp-ing the question!

I wrote this post a while back, but had to ensure that all recipients had received their packages before posting about it. Would hate to spoil the surprise! :)

We've officially been engaged for over a month {yay!} and the time has come to start making some big (read: important!) decisions. Like...
Where are we getting married?
When are we getting married?
What's the cutest way to phrase 'will you be my bridesmaid'?

Just kidding on that last one... kind of, but not really.

I'm not entirely sure how brides planned weddings prior to Pinterest, but for those of you that did kudos to you. I mean, there is such an insane {insane!} amount of useful information on that site for planning a wedding, that you may never see the same pin twice. And honestly... quite often in the 'wedding' category, I don't!

Which led me to a predicament when I was gathering inspiration for a "will you be my bridesmaid?" gift for the beautiful ladies I've asked to be in the wedding party. That is, how can one ever be completely original?

I've seen the latest trends in 'popping the question' to your girlfriends. I love the idea of giving them a little gift up front, as a token of your friendship and your appreciation to them for standing with you on your wedding day. Of course, I didn't have any trouble with scheming up the appropriate gifts to give. I mean, who doesn't love gold + glitter + champagne + bows!  {...and if you don't, are you sure we're really friends??}
I'm kidding. Kind of kidding.

I scoured the Internet for hours looking for any appropriate phrasing to somehow combine all of the seemingly random ideas together. I kept coming up empty handed. Naturally, the one time I was hopeful to just 'interpret' another idea, I was completely out of luck. :)

Fortunately, in the long run, I played around with enough puns and synonyms and oxymorons that I decided to stop thinking so literally about the question. That's when I came up with this little catch phrase.

It was the perfect little tagline to accompany the sweet little bracelet and mini bottle of champs! Each bridesmaid received a bow bangle from Kate Spade--one of my all-time favorite fashion designers and just general inspiration for living a happy, fancy life! I love her girly, classy, whimsical brand and plan on incorporating that same style into the little details of the wedding. Champagne is another favorite of mine--it's refreshing, crisp, and makes even an ordinary Tuesday feel like a celebration!

So far, I was able to ask all but one bridesmaid in person, but this little guy had to go through my trusty friends at the United States Postal Service. Each one was carefully packaged, and sealed with a personalized care notice and a card on the inside.

I am having waaaay too much fun with all of the little details there are in planning this wedding! As you might have suspected, the whole she-bang will be a big celebration of DIY. Stay tuned, and I promise to share more of the little details with you all!

2014 resolutions

I start every year reflecting on the year that has just past, and looking forward to a fresh, new one. The new year brings with it opportunity in the form of New Years Resolutions, and a chance to become a better version of yourself. However and in whatever way YOU choose. I love that.

Last year, I had some lofty ambitions. Life happened, and I fell short of some of these, but those that I had already begun I stuck with. Now it's a way of life. I have a new found love for fashion, due to making an effort to dress more professionally. My pantry has never looked better, I've made a marginal effort in blogging more this year (woo!), and I've started a couple of books... just for fun! I never do that, but I so enjoy it!

This year, I'm focusing on a couple of really important things.

I recently read this article, which really hit home for me. Though it's focused around childhood, I believe the same goes for any relationship. Both Spencer and I... though admittedly, it's mostly me!...are completely plugged in, all the time. I keep my personal, business, and personal business email up and running at all times. My friends and I are text message champions. I check Instagram every time I look at my phone. When I get bored of Instagram, I'm on Facebook or Pinterest. When I have seen all there is to see on there, I am playing a game on my phone. And once I tire of all of those things, I'm starting all over again. It's embarrassing to admit, but this is a typical day for me. I'm constantly plugged in. I don't want my fiancee to get used to seeing the top of my head more than my face.

This year, I vow to unplug at nights. I only have a few hours at home with Spencer each night to relax, unwind, and catch up with each other. Most nights, that just means a quick dinner and some television time, but I hate not being fully present. I vow to change that.

That sounds so silly... but I need to take better care of my skin. I have a daily routine, but it's not enough to produce the results I'm after. The last thing I want to focus on in wedding pictures is "dangit, why didn't I take better care of my skin when I had the chance!?". That includes eating more greens (green smoothies are a proven brightener for my face!), better quality skin care products, waxing/threading, and establishing and maintaining a routine. It'll take me farther than just my wedding date if I make a habit out of it. Hopefully, it'll mean that I develop a healthy daily routine that I can stick to!

I only made two resolutions ("goals") for this year, as the wedding planning is taking over the remainder of my sanity :) These are two things that I am looking forward to overcoming far past the year 2014, so I am going to make it a conscious effort to see my resolutions into next year.

What about you? Did you make any resolutions this year?

holiday happenings.

We had a wonderful Christmas vacation! We spent the majority of it in Amarillo with Spencer's family, but managed to squeeze in a few days to ourselves in SD. We were even among the lucky ones to score tickets to the Holiday Bowl in order to watch our Texas Tech Red Raiders claim a victory against the Arizona State Sun Devils!

Here's a few snapshots through the lens of my iPhone. Enjoy!

we kicked off our break by opening a mound of gifts from my parents!
the only thing that could have made it better would've been if they'd been there to enjoy it with us!
spencer's mom's tree.
pretty gift wrap + bows + glitter make my heart sing :)
we did a lot of movie watching by the fire...
current flick: love actually
we i drank a lot of hot cocoa.
in flannel jammie's.

don't make me remind you of what happened last year.
at least this time around, i came prepared :)
...and lounging by the fire.
spencer and his cute family before heading out to celebrate our engagement!
for the record... it's really difficult to get five people into a picture...
with everyone's eyes open!
loving that the champagne seems to always be present!
i'll keep soaking it up for as long as possible :)
back in san diego and headed to the bowl game!
the US navy seals parachuted in to the stadium
from a height of 4,000 feet. incredible!
...and they landed with perfection.
the 'goin band from raiderland' rocked the halftime show!
wreck 'em :)
